OEM HID Xenon Ballasts

When a factory HID xenon headlight fails, the issue is not always the globe. Often, the fault lies within the OEM HID ballast (also known as a headlight control module) or the high-voltage HID igniter. At Pro Vision Lighting™, we supply premium OEM-grade replacement ballasts and igniters designed to directly replace your failed factory units at a fraction of the dealership price.

Our range covers hundreds of vehicles including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche, Ford, Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, and Honda. We stock direct cross-reference replacements for all major OEM ballast manufacturers including Hella, Valeo, Denso, Koito, Mitsubishi Electric, and AL/Bosch.

How to Match Your Replacement HID Ballast

HID ballasts are highly specific to the vehicle's electrical architecture and are not universally interchangeable. The fastest and most accurate way to find your replacement is to match the OEM part number.

  1. Locate the Part Number: Remove your failed ballast from the headlight assembly. The OEM part number will be printed or stamped on the unit's label.
  2. Search or Browse: Use the site search or browse the products below to find the matching part number. Many ballasts carry multiple cross-reference numbers (e.g., an Audi number and a Hella number on the same unit).
  3. Confirm Visual Fitment: Check the product images to ensure the shape, mounting points, and electrical connectors match your original unit.

Not sure which ballast you need? Contact us with your vehicle details and a photo of your existing unit — our team will confirm the correct replacement.

Common Signs of a Failing HID Ballast

  • Flickering or Strobe Effect: The headlight flickers rapidly before stabilising, or continues to flicker while driving.
  • Intermittent Operation: The headlight occasionally fails to turn on, but works fine after restarting the vehicle.
  • Delayed Ignition: The headlight takes significantly longer to reach full brightness compared to the other side.
  • Complete Failure: The headlight does not turn on at all, even after replacing the HID globe with a known working unit.

Diagnostic Tip: Swap the working globe from the opposite headlight into the non-working side. If the light still fails to ignite, the ballast or igniter is the likely culprit.

FAQ: Why Do Some Ballasts Say 85V, 1100V and 1200V — But Also 23,000V?

The different voltage ratings refer to the three separate stages of HID operation:

1. Ignition Stage — Approximately 23,000V

When the HID globe is switched on, the gases inside are cold and highly resistant to electrical flow. To initiate the arc, the ballast's igniter generates a high-voltage pulse of approximately 23,000 volts for a fraction of a second. This ionises the gases and creates the first arc path.

2. Warm-Up Stage — Approximately 1100V to 1200V

Once the arc is established, the ballast reduces the voltage immediately. During warm-up, the internal salts and gases continue to vaporise and stabilise. The ballast maintains approximately 1100V–1200V to keep the arc stable while the globe reaches full operating temperature.

3. Steady-State Operation — Approximately 85V to 100V

Once the globe reaches full thermal temperature, the ballast reduces to its normal running range of approximately 85V–100V, regulating current flow to maintain consistent light output and protect the globe from damage.
