Is It the Globe, Ballast, or Igniter?

Before purchasing, it is important to correctly diagnose the fault in your headlight system. Because D1S globes have the igniter built-in, diagnosing a D1S system is more straightforward than older systems with separate igniters.

• Globe fault signs: A failing globe will often exhibit a pink or purple discoloration just before it dies. It may also flicker rapidly, or turn on briefly before shutting off entirely.
• Ballast fault signs: If the headlight does not attempt to start at all, or produces a brief, faint flash and then remains completely dark, the ballast is likely the issue.
• Diagnostic tip: The most reliable way to confirm the fault is to swap the globe from the working headlight to the non-working side. If the fault moves with the globe, the globe needs replacing. If the fault stays on the same side despite using a known working globe, the ballast is faulty.
